What is Subcision?

Subcision is a minimally invasive procedure that employs a specialised needle to release scar tissue that is anchored to the underlying skin layers. This technique helps elevate depressed scars and stimulates collagen production, contributing to improved skin texture. Potential advantages of subcision include its relatively non-invasive nature, shorter recovery period, and suitability for addressing certain types of acne scars.

Following the procedure, some degree of bruising and swelling may occur, though these typically subside within approximately one week. Adhering to post-procedure care instructions provided by a doctor is important to help minimise the risk of complications and support optimal outcomes.

Subcision for Acne Scars

Acne scarring can be a source of frustration for many individuals. For common types of acne scars, treatment options such as chemical peels and laser treatments can be considered. For atrophic acne scars, which develop when the skin produces insufficient collagen during healing, this can result in sunken or indented scars.

Some examples of atrophic acne scars include boxcar, rolling, and ice pick scars, each with their own unique appearance and depth. Tethered scars, often associated with rolling scars, are scars that are anchored or connected to the underlying skin tissue by fibrous bands.

The deep acne scars described above can be challenging for traditional acne scar treatments to effectively improve. One treatment option for these types of scars is subcision.

Is Subcision painful?

Subcision is generally well tolerated, and most patients describe the procedure as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. To make it easier, a cream is usually given to numb the area before treatment, which helps reduce discomfort during the procedure. Your doctor will also advise on aftercare to support healing and comfort.

Is Subcision Permanent?

Subcision can deliver long-lasting results because it works by releasing the fibrous bands that pull acne scars down, allowing the skin to heal in a smoother way. While the improvement is generally permanent for the areas treated, outcomes can vary depending on factors such as scar severity, skin type, and natural healing response.

Does Subcision Work?

Yes, subcision is an established treatment for certain types of depressed acne scars. Many patients notice visible improvement after a few sessions. For best results, it is often combined with complementary treatments such as laser resurfacing or chemical peels. A doctor can assess your skin and recommend the most suitable approach for your needs.
