Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
What Is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) employs a carefully controlled range of intense light to address
issues such as pigmentation, unwanted hair, uneven skin tones, and fine
veins.
IPL also assists in managing acne and reducing oil production, encourages
the dermis to tighten and improve skin firmness, resulting in a smoother appearance.
This technology is safe and effective and typically involves little
to no recovery time.
How does IPL work?
IPL works by sending pulses of light into the skin, where it is absorbed by specific targets such as the pigment in hair follicles or the red colour in blood vessels. When the light is absorbed, it converts into heat, which damages the targeted cells while leaving the surrounding skin largely unaffected.
This process, known as selective photothermolysis, makes IPL useful for hair reduction, pigmentation concerns, and visible blood vessels. Unlike lasers that use a single wavelength of light, IPL uses multiple wavelengths, which makes it a versatile treatment option. Most patients require a series of sessions, as hair and skin respond differently depending on their natural growth and healing cycles.
Is IPL Permanent?
IPL is not considered a permanent solution for hair removal or skin conditions. In the case of hair
reduction, IPL can significantly decrease hair density and regrowth, but results vary based
on
factors such as skin type, hair color, and hormonal influences. Many patients
experience long-term
reduction, but maintenance sessions are often required.
Similarly, treatment for pigmentation and vascular can produce lasting improvement, but new spots or vessels may appear over time due to sun
exposure, aging, or underlying conditions. From a medical perspective, IPL should be viewed as a
long-term management tool rather than a permanent cure.
What Is IPL Suitable For?
Removal / Lightening of Pigmentation
Removal of Hair
Removal of Fine Veins
Acne / Oil Control
Do I need to shave before IPL?
Yes, patients are advised to shave the treatment area 2–3 days before an IPL session. Shaving allows
the IPL light to target the hair follicle root beneath the skin, making the treatment more effective.
Avoid waxing or plucking, as these methods remove the follicle root, which is necessary for IPL to work properly.
